Cool Open Source Applications and Utilities

Open Office

I think we don't need to pay any more $$$ for the Microsoft Office Products. Sun Microsystems released Open Source Office Suite called OpenOffice. This OpenOffice is a multiplatform and multilingual office suite and an open-source project. The Main thing is it is free to download.

This OpenOffice bundle consists of
Writer - Equivalent to Microsoft Word
Impress - Equivalent to Microsoft Powerpoint
Calc - Equivalent to Microsoft Excel
Draw - Equivalent to Microsoft Visio
It also contains additional modules like Math and Base.

The important feature of these products is that after creating the document, we can right away create a pdf document directly without any hurdles.
The Open Office Documents are compatible to Microsoft documents. These open source products also avoids pirated copies.

May be Microsoft needs to change the strategy plan in handling of Open Source Applications. Otherwise, they are the ones who are going to hurt badly in the future.

PDF Creator

Want to convert any web page, doc etc into a pdf file directly from the browser? You can use cutepdf. It is a freeware cool utility which is capable of converting any webpage into pdf file directly by printing the document to cute pdf instead to a normal printer. Also You need pdf converter for doing that.

Internet through Powerlines

Yesterday i was browsing through net and found an article related to providing Internet through Power Lines. The Telecom company Comtek in Manassas,VA started providing it for $28.95 per month with the 300Kbps speed. Already Google invested 100 Million Dollars for this research with Current Communications,Maryland based company, which is a competitor for Comtek.

May be Indian Government should think of using this Powerline technology for providing Internet in Rural Areas instead of going through Fibre Optical cables. Since the Infrastructure for the powerlines already exists in most places(??!!) in India, it will be easy for implementing it

Ahimsa

Every one says that India got Independence by Gandhi’s Ahimsa.

Gandhi’s Ahimsa failed when Nehru sent the Indian Military Army troops to Kashmir with the guidance of Gandhi in the First Indo-Pakistan Kashmir War held on October 1947. Ahimsa should not really be applied to a Country.

Gandhi passed away in 30 Jan 1948 and the First Indo-Pakistan war ended on 1 January 1949.

I have attached the webshot when Dr. J.W. Elder, Assistant Professor of Sociology. University of Wisconsin, Madison, U.S interviewed the Holiness Paramacharya Sri Chandrasekharendra Sarasvathi Mahaswamigal(1894-1994) of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. The below thing really makes sense for me.

Dr. Elder:

Ahimsa has sometimes been included as one of the major teachings within Hinduism. In view of the recent Chinese attack on India, what would your interpretation be of the present day application of ahimsa?

His Holiness:

I think you are basing your question on ahimsa as Gandhi interpreted it. Gandhi in turn based his belief and ideas about ahimsa on Lord Buddha.

Both of them were in my opinion failures. This is my viewpoint. When Nehru sent the Indian Army to Kashmir in 1947, he said that he was sending the army after consulting and taking instruction from Gandhi. Hence Gandhi's failure in ahimsa. There is one version of Lord Buddha's death according to which he ate pig's flesh and dies as a consequence. Most of the Buddhist monks are non-vegetarians in the Buddhist countries such as Ceylon, Burma, Malaya and China. Therefore, Buddha's ahimsa has also failed. I think the correct interpretation of ahimsa is that it is virtue applicable only to the highest asrama of the highest caste, the brahmin sanyasi. When he has renounced the world he should do no violence at all, not even pluck a leaf from a tree. If anybody beats him, he should do nothing to defend himself and he should receive them with joy But this doctrine of ahimsa is not meant to be applied to nations or the leader of the nations. Some feel that ahimsa brought India here independence. This is not actually the case. The English had their own reasons for setting India free, whether or not we had been practicing ahimsa.

According to Sastras, the rigid of ahimsa are not applicable to the Government or to the leaders. Our Sastras make it clear that a ruler who does not defend his country fails in his duty. The rules of defending the country are not only for China, but for the nation. Of course, a leader should not wage an aggressive war. Nor should he refuse to defend his country if it is attacked. If a citizen is attacked by another citizen, our Sastras make it clear that it is the duty of the Government to protect its citizen even if it means capital punishment for the offender. Further the Sastras have made it clear to what extend everybody should follow ahimsa.

Eventhough the below issue is not related to Ahimsa, even after freedom, Peoples in india are talking about their own Rights in a democratic country. The Person who is talking about the rights fails to do his Normal duty in which he should perform. In order to do the normal duty, The person is looking for bribe.

Google Talk Features

Some features in Google Talk

*boldletter* returns boldletter
_italicstyle_ returns italicstyle
Pressing F10 initialises the call with the contact person
Pressing F11 terminates the call with the contact person
Pressing F9 allows to compose an email to the contact person

In the Google Shortcut, change the target to
"c:\program files\google\google talk\googletalk.exe" /nomutex  and rename it as GoogleTalk1.  Copy this shortcut to create another shortcut as GoogleTalk2. By  doing this, we can run multiple instances of Google Talk at a single time itself.
Similarly the following parameters can also be added in the shortcut:-
  • /autostart: when Google Talk is run with this parameter, it will check the registry settings to see if it needs to be started or not. If the "Start automatically with Windows" option is unchecked, it won't start.
  • /forcestart: same as /autostart, but forces it to start no matter what option was set.
  • /register: registers Google Talk in the registry, includig the GMail Compose method.
  • /checkupdate: check for newer versions
  • /plaintextauth: uses plain authentication mechanism instead then Google's GAIA mechanism. Used for testing the plain method on Google's servers.
  • /nogaiaauth: disables GAIA authentication method. The same as above.
  • /factoryreset: set settings back to default.
  • /gaiaserver servername.com: uses a different GAIA server to connect to Google Talk. Used for debug purposes only, there are no other known GAIA servers.
  • /mailto email@host.com: send an email with Gmail
  • /create_sesion
  • /s upgrade: used when upgrading Google Talk
Google Talk in a Web Browser :-
You can use chat with GMail Users  in a Web Browser. This URL allows to login to the Google Talk with your user name and password and choose
Server : gmail.com(5222) Google Talk (talk.google.com)
This site allows to chat with Other Google Users even if the Google Talk Software is not installed in your PC.
I will add more features as i come across.

Google Wallet

Google Wallet !!!!!!

First, i think Google will relase online payment system just like pay-pal. Then they immediately go for VOIP to traditional phone calls in Google Talk so that they cash in the money through Google Payment. It looks like that Code name for Google Online Payment system is called "Google Wallet".
Eventhough Google is declining it, then what the heck is needed for registering “Google Payment Corporation” in California on April 13,2005.
Since Microsoft acquired Teleo today (http://www.teleo.com/ doing voip calls from PC to traditional phone lines @2cents per min) , Google is planning to the release the Web System for Online Payment and VOIP through Google Talk really fast. Now they stopped the downloading of VOIP software from Teleo and closed the services to the existing customers. Also they are rewarding 10$ credit to each one and the remaining unused $). The big giant started giving free $$$ bec google is on the way. Microsoft was forced to buy Teleo .
When I checked the calling rate to india in Teleo, it is 12 cents per min somewhat higher. For calling US, it is only 2 cents per min. Also it includes around 5$ monthly charge. By acquiring Teleo, the big fatty giant is planning to include of making voip calls in the next MSN messgenger release. Only Google has the ability and power($$$,media support and people crazy about google products bec of big giant domination, simplicity and perfectness in their products) to stop the big Giant who initially controlled the entire IT industry. Also Google does not have too much Security Patch releases once/thrice in a week.

Why the Big Giant needs to buy a small piece of company Teleo only with 25 employees (http://www.datafuse.net/page.php?news=603) ?, it is all because they already integrated Teleo software with MS products like Outlook,Internet Explorer etc for making VOIP calls. Soon, Microsoft will upgrade the MSN Messenger new release with VOIP facilities.

One thing for sure is that because of competition between Microsoft and Google over VOIP, Calling to Traditional Phones through internet will be relatively cheaper with excellent quality than conventional phone lines.

I feel that Google Wallet is in Testing Stage, it looks like they will be having official release during any time in September 2005. After Google Wallet released, They will incorporate VOIP changes in Google Talk immediately.

Also they registered the website www.googlepayment.com with the domain registration at InterNIC

Go Google !

Google Sites - Mystery !!!!!!!!!!

I saw these sites are registered by google

http://console.google.com/ (It leads to the Working site which asks for username and password)

http://www.google.com/wallet ( i think it makes sense they registered for online payment just like paypal)

http://eval.google.com/ ( heard that google is using this site for human tweaking the web search and paying 10$-20$ per hour for each person hired through out the world)

http://kh.google.com/ (Archive Site for Google Images)

http://net.google.com/ (Getting Timed out error, it looks like they registered for providing free wireless internet throughout USA since they sponsored the company Feeva in Sanfransisco for this project and started already buying unknown used optic cables through out the USA.Feeva is providing Free Wireless Internet in Sanfransisco just like Philadelphia. It is time for Verizon,Comcast,SBC to look for other opportunities )

When you try to go the below sites , it is getting forwarded to the Google Account Home Page.(Strangely if you have logged in previously, it gets logged out automatically)
http://fusion.google.com
http://purchase.google.com
http://sandbox.google.com
http://jump.google.com
http://d.google.com
http://virgin.google.com
